IGA: Income Generating Activities
We're excited to share with you what God is doing in Ethiopia and hope you’re encouraged to see how Calvary is partnering with ministries around the world. Simply scroll down to access each session. We invite you to step in to the opportunities and engage as God moves you.
What is an Income Generating Activity?
Since 2011, Calvary has had a partnership and relationship with Hitata Genet CarePoint in Ethiopia. Through child sponsorships, we as a church have helped provide education, food, clean water, medical care, and spiritual discipleship to 220 children living in poverty.
Hitata Genet has a desire to break the cycle of poverty in their community and be self-sustainable by 2030. We are committed to helping them do that. Their desire is to establish revenue-generating activities through a dairy farm in their local community. This dairy farm will provide jobs for the parents of the children and local community members. The hope is that the impact of providing jobs in this impoverished community will help break the cycle of poverty for generations to come. In order to see this plan come to fruition we invite you into the process!

The Journey to Become a part of an IGA
Income generating activities provide hope, empowerment, and dignity to participants and their families as they unlock their potential and learn how to use their God-given talents to build the Kingdom of God through innovative, sustainable means.
IGAs provide families of Hitata Genet children with the necessary tools to move towards independence. These tools are business development, education, and ownership programs, which are offered to parents of Hitata Genet children and provide revenue for both critical needs and savings groups. As children graduate from Hitata Genet, families and graduates of the program are expected to be able to get and/or create jobs, which will then break the cycle of poverty in their community.
Below is the journey of how a parent of a child at Hitata Genet can become involved in an IGA. It is a long process, but the hope is to empower parents for a better future for their entire family.

A Story of Life Change
Lemlem is the mother of a sponsored child, Asdenak. She and her husband have four children and have been struggling to survive—they could not feed their family on her husband’s low-paying salary. Lemlem decided she needed help and began the process to join a self-help group to get business training and support. She saw the potential of joining the self-help group and began to build confidence in herself. Her self-help group decided to lend her money so she could open a small shop at the gate of her home to sell small items. Currently she is making money and is happy to own her own business and support her family. Her dream is to continue saving money and hopes to open a big shop in the future. Lemlem shared, “Even though I had the idea to start a business, access to finances has always been a challenge. Praise the Lord I got this opportunity through Children’s HopeChest and I can see my dream becoming a reality. I decided to start this business to generate daily income so that I can give my children a better life”.

Call to Prayer
In order for Hitata Genet to become self-sustainable, the community and the project need prayer. Below is a prayer card for you to download and put somewhere to remind you to pray for the students and parents of those at Hitata Genet.
Call to Action
Thank you for learning more about our partnership with Hitata Genet and the way they are breaking through the cycle of poverty in Ethiopia.
Calvary has a unique opportunity to give financially, and we invite you to participate with us. As mentioned in the previous sessions, Hitata Genet is creating an Income Generating Activity. Calvary will provide cows and land to help create a dairy farm, a much needed provision in this region of Ethiopia.
We would love for you to help us make this happen. While we have raised the first round of funding, we still need to raise about $32,000 to reach our goal of $49,216 to launch the dairy farm. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining with us financially to reach this goal.
Count me in!
Thank you!
